In this course, Apprentices will learn Basic Shipbuilding drawing elements and terminology, and use Engineering Reports, Inspection Reports, drawings for both CVN and VCS programs in practical hands-on activities that require the student to navigate and interpret each drawing in its entirety. Upon completion of the course, the apprentices will demonstrate proficiency in using the various types of blueprint drawings that are used by the X32 Sheet Metal workers in the most common work environments.

In this course, the apprentice will be introduced to orthographic and isometric drawings, line types, and measurements. They will also be introduced to working drawings, drawing zones, welding symbols, abbreviations, symbols and terms used in shipbuilding, MAC BOM, and inspection and engineering reports.

X322 Materials and Machine Processes class will cover material types, characteristics and gauges of sheet metal, screen and wire mesh, perforated plate and expanded metals, structural shapes, pipes and pipe sizing, drilling, tapping, fasteners, shield arc metal welding, certified operator machinery, Sheet Metal Department mechanic operated machinery with a tour and demonstrations of machines in Building 5.

The Apprentice should learn the fundamental skills associated with the layout and stretching of various materials and how to account for the loss/gain of material prior to forming.

This course has practical, hands-on format, requiring apprentices to apply the blueprint reading skills needed on the job. The course covers all the types of drawings the apprentices use or will use on the job. Apprentices work individually or in pairs, as assigned by the instructor, to answer questions pertaining to a specific type of drawing.
